About this guide

This is an independent guide maintained by nikag-ai on GitHub. It is not an NPS website and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Park Service.

What is sourced

Park descriptions, activities, planning cautions, and qualitative climate notes are based on official NPS visitor pages and park profiles. Each park links to its sources and displays the date we checked its planning notes. These notes are a dated summary, not a live status feed. A source may itself have an older publication date.

What is editorial

Month selections are a shortlist for general sightseeing and outdoor visits, informed by the parks' broad climate and access patterns. They are not an official ranking, a forecast, or an exhaustive list of suitable months. The best timing depends on the activity: winter recreation, cave tours, waterfalls, high-country hikes, and marine trips can have very different seasons.

Suggested days are rough starting points for time in the park, excluding travel. They are not minimum stays or validated itineraries. You may need more or less time. The main guide defaults to recommendations for the selected month. You can also sort by name or suggested days. Saving a favorite does not change its rating or position in these sorts.

How the editorial ratings work

Stars express our editorial recommendation for a general sightseeing trip. They are not visitor reviews, an NPS rating, or measured popularity. We have not aggregated online reviews. We assess the distinctiveness and range of park experiences using official park descriptions, then combine that judgment with a preferred seasonal window informed by NPS climate and access guidance.

With a month selected: 60% seasonal fit + 40% park experience. The result is rounded to one decimal on a five-star scale. For example, seasonal fit of 4 and park experience of 5 produces 4.4 stars. Without a month, the score shows park experience alone. Equal scores sort alphabetically; their order is not an additional recommendation.

FactorEditorial scale
Seasonal fit5: one of our standout months. 4: another good option on our shortlist. 2: outside the general sightseeing shortlist; a trip may still suit a specific activity. This is not a closure or safety assessment.
Park experience5: an exceptional combination of landmark sights and varied experiences. 4.5: an especially compelling destination. 4: a distinctive trip anchor. 3: a more focused visit. These are subjective travel recommendations, not a judgment of a park's ecological or cultural value.

Small score differences help order the list; they do not establish objective superiority. Your interests, access needs, starting point and tolerance for crowds may favor a different park. A five-star recommendation does not guarantee availability or ideal conditions. Travel cost, live weather, crowd levels and transportation are not included.

What we do not measure

We do not currently provide visitor ratings, popularity scores, Reddit consensus, monthly crowd measurements, average temperatures, or flight and driving estimates. Earlier unsupported values were withdrawn during the September 22, 2026 content audit. Official sources can help you check weather, routes, schedules, permits, fees, accessibility, and closures for your own dates.

The night-sky filter includes parks in the NPS stargazing directory and additional parks with park-specific NPS night-sky guidance. A park outside this reviewed set may also offer stargazing. Dark Sky International certification is identified only where supported by an NPS source. The filter does not predict visibility or imply that every area is open after dark; check each park’s access rules.

Photographs

Park images are selected from official NPS park profiles, visitor pages, and the NPS photo gallery. We prioritize recognizable landmarks and landscapes, and check the crops used in cards and guides. Each park guide identifies its photo title, credit, and source image. Photographs show a place at a point in time, not current conditions.

Corrections

If you find an error, report it on GitHub with the park name, incorrect claim, and an authoritative source. The reviewed dataset is shared by both versions of the site.
